CRISTALLERIE ST LOUIS - MATRICE
KIKI VAN EIJK
KIKI VAN EIJK
It was while looking at the huge supply of moulds in the Saint-Louis warehouse that Kiki van Eijk had one of her sure-fire flashes of inspiration. Some two thousand cast-iron moulds line the shelves of this dark room, while four thousand others nestle in crates and cellars. Kiki very quickly saw beyond their outward appearances. She saw busts. People. Hollow figures. She moved closer, wanting to hoist herself up to the ceiling, to caress them one by one as if stroking a face, to open them up, spread them out, study the secrets of their movement and their relationship with light. With what should she fill these empty shells? She felt the stirrings of an intense, carnivalesque idea. She would make a crystal lamp in the shape of a mould. Opening it up by hand would liberate the light inside, softened by a Japanese paper screen. And because she would be giving birth to these new creations, she would call the collection “Matrice”, French for “matrix”.
